Lost in all of the hype that comes with seeing Joey Spallina score goals – he scores a lot of ’em, and they’re usually pretty flashy – is the fact that Spallina is also an incredible passer.

Two years ago, the Team 91 2022 Smash attackman put up a balanced 65-goal, 66-assist season as a freshman for Mount Sinai, and it’s a rarity to see a player with so many points with such a down-the-middle point breakdown.

Tuesday, the Syracuse commit, ranked No. 1 in the country for the 2022 class by both NLFRankings.com and Inside Lacrosse, showed off his passing acumen once more. He dished out a whopping 13 assists, including 12 in the first half, as the Mustangs ran past Hauppauge, 16-3. Those 13 helpers broke the Suffolk County single-game assists record, a number that could easily have piled up higher had Spallina played in the fourth quarter.

“I just have to give credit first to my teammates because obviously without them, that can’t happen,” Spallina told Newsday’s Brian Heyman. “The way that they were playing off the ball just made it easier for me to find them, and they would score and finish it off. We were playing together today.”

“He played the most selfless lacrosse game I’ve seen him play in his career,” Mount Sinai coach Harold Drumm said of Spallina’s performance.

’24 Wolfpack Lucas LaForge finished off a lot of those Spallina feeds, finishing with a season and career high five goals. ’22 Austin Oppenheim (Fairfield) tallied once and was a dominant 10-for-12 at the faceoff X, while ’23 Warriors Cole Marsala chipped in an assist. ’23 Bandits Jake Spallina was 10-for-11 at the stripe.
