Chaminade had St. Anthony’s on the ropes for an upset bid after a half of play Wednesday.
Luke Breslin made it his mission to down the Flyers. The Team 91 2024 Wolfpack attackman buried a natural hat trick in the third quarter to jumpstart the Friars’ superb second-half push en route to a 12-6 win over Chaminade.
“I went into halftime realizing that I needed to make an impact in order for us to get a lead,” Breslin said. “We came out and I scored three straight and I think that really set the tone for the rest of the half. I think our defense and (’24 Wolfpack faceoff midfielder Michael) Moon (Brown) stepped up bigtime in the second half.
The Friars’ defense, headlined by the likes of ’24 Wolfpack defenseman Dante Vardaro (Penn) and ’25 Shock LSM Parker McDonald (North Carolina), held Chaminade off the scoreboard in the second half.
“First half, it’s a Chaminade game. It’s a rivalry. There are a lot of jitters. We have a lot of young players. Guys who, including myself, didn’t play last year,” Vardaro said. “A lot of nerves on the field, and coming into halftime, we realized that we have this. There were easy fixes and got the nerves out at halftime and we were perfect from there on out.”
Moon finished 11-for-16 at the faceoff stripe to go with a goal. ’25 Shock Gary Merrill (North Carolina) hammered home a pair of goals for the Friars.
’24 Wolfpack and Chaminade goalie Sal Caputo (Iona) denied a dozen shots sent his way. ’25 Shock Hunter Kimball scored once, while ’24 Wolfpack defenseman Ben Fox (North Carolina) led a defensive effort that gave the Flyers a chance at the upset.
Wantagh 15, South Side 11
