2023 Team 91 in College: March 20 Recap

Joey Spallina was back to scoring a lot of points on Long Island last week.

The Team 91 2022 Smash attackman and Syracuse freshman was up to his old tricks for the Orange. Spallina racked up four goals and three assists to lead ‘Cuse to a 16-8 win over host Hofstra on Team 91 College Night.

Spallina also caused a pair of turnovers on the ride and also chipped in two ground balls. Syracuse also got two goals and an assist from ’22 Smash Michael Leo (St. Anthony’s)’20 Crush defenseman Nick Caccamo (Harborfields) vacuumed up a ground ball and caused a turnover to spearhead a stout Orange defense.

’21 Blaze SSDM Chris Barry (East Meadow) took the ball away once while also grabbing a ground ball for the Pride.

Duke 15, North Carolina 8
North Carolina 25, Dartmouth 7

’20 Crush Brennan O’Neill (St. Anthony’s) racked up four assists and also tallied once to fuel the Blue Devils. ’18 Extreme Owen Caputo (Middle Creek, N.C.) dished out two helpers and scored once, while ’19 Orange LSM Tyler Carpenter (Salisbury, Conn.) caused a turnover and gobbled up four ground balls.

’20 Crush Andrew McAdorey (St. Anthony’s) scored once and took the ball away twice for Duke, which also got an assist from ’20 Crush Aidan Danenza (St. Anthony’s).

’21 Blaze Johnny Schwarz (Shoreham-Wading River) tallied once for UNC to go along with two ground balls against Duke. Schwarz also scored once in the win over Dartmouth.

Johns Hopkins 12, Navy 9
Johns Hopkins 12, Delaware 10

’20 Crush SSDM Brett Martin (Half Hollow Hills East) helped the Blue Jays stay red hot with a pair of ground balls against Navy and a caused turnover and a ground ball in the win over the Blue Hens.

’20 Crush Xavier Arline (Shoreham-Wading River) paired a goal with an assist for the Mids, who also got a goal and two ground balls from ’22 Smash Jack Flaherty (Chaminade).

Binghamton 14, Merrimack 7

’21 Blaze sniper Matt Keegan (Sachem North) continued his recent hot streak with a fantastic four-goal, one-assist, two-ground ball day to help the Bearcats to their third win in the past four games. ’18 Extreme defenseman Max Verch (Syosset) secured three ground balls and took the ball away once for Binghamton.

Cornell 20, Yale 10

’19 Orange Angelo Petrakis (Massapequa) helped the Big Red to a surprising rout by winning eight of 13 faceoffs and collecting five ground balls.

’21 Blaze Machado Rodriguez (Chaminade) snapped home his first career goal to highlight a 10-for-16 day at the faceoff dot for Yale. Rodriguez picked up six ground balls and caused a turnover for the Bulldogs, who also got 11 saves and four ground balls from ’19 White goalie Jared Paquette (West Islip) and a pair of caused turnovers from ’19 Orange defensemen Mikey Alexander (West Islip).

Army 12, Lehigh 10

’19 Justin Tiernan (Glenn) buried a hat trick, two of the goals coming off of feeds from ’19 Orange Christian Mulé (Half Hollow Hills West) as part of a three-assist day, for the Mountain Hawks.

’19 Orange John Sidorski (East Islip) also pocketed a goal for Lehigh.

Rutgers 11, UMass 5

’18 Extreme LSM Ethan Rall (Islip) helped the Scarlet Knights put on a defensive clinic with a trio of caused turnovers and two ground balls. ’19 Orange James Ringer (Bayport-Blue Point) snagged a ground ball in the win.

Harvard 16, Brown 15

’19 Orange All-Ivy LSM Greg Campisi (St. Anthony’s) caused turnover and grabbed a ground ball for the Crimson, who beat their Ivy rivals in overtime.

’22 Smash Marcus Wertheim (Smithtown East) tallied once and set up another for the Bears, who also got a pair of ground balls from ’20 Crush SSDM Kevin Sweeney (Mount Sinai).

’19 Orange Blake Behlen (Commack) jumpstarted the mid-week win over St. John’s with a goal, an assist and three ground balls, while ’22 Smash Sean Carlo (Wantagh) snapped home a goal for the Seawolves. Behlen and Carlo each tallied once in the rout of Hampton.

’20 Crush defenseman Jack Schirtzer (Mount Sinai) snatched up a half-dozen ground balls against Stony Brook, while ’20 Orange defenseman Jack McCarthy (Connetquot) added one. ’19 Orange Kyle Munson (Calhoun) stopped seven shots in a half of work before denying 16 shots against Saint Joseph’s. McCarthy caused two turnovers on the back end for the Red Storm.

’19 Orange Ryan Doran (Half Hollow Hills East) fired home two goals on two shots and ’19 White defenseman Alex Keener (Bethpage) took the ball away once and grabbed two ground balls to help the Hawks snap a three-game losing streak.

Air Force 18, Queens 6

’20 Crush LSM Chris Bardak (St. Anthony’s) swatted out a turnover and picked up two ground balls to fuel the Falcons’ rout.

Queens got the same stat line from ’20 Orange defenseman Colby Suglia (Mattituck).

Albany 15, UMass-Lowell 7

’22 Smash Alex Pfeiffer (Sachem North) ripped one to the back of the net and grabbed two ground balls to pace the Great Danes. ’22 Smash defenseman Max Neeson (Pottsgrove, Pa.) collected a ground ball as part of a stingy defensive effort from Albany.

Manhattan 9, Sacred Heart 7

’19 White Christian Lyons (Syosset) doled out an assist and caused a turnover as the Jaspers won for the third time in four games.

VMI 14, Siena 10

’20 Crush defenseman Trevor Marsala (Mount Sinai) was a beast for the Saints, pulling away a career-best five turnovers and snaring three ground balls. ’21 Ambush Ryan McCarthy (Northport) handed out a quartet of assists to go with three ground balls for Siena.

’20 Crush Jayson Tingue (Bay Shore) robbed 11 opportunities sent his way in the UMBC cage.

Canisius 18, Marist 16

’21 Blaze defenseman Aiden McCaffrey (Comsewogue) collected three ground balls for the Red Foxes.

Penn 9, Princeton 8

’20 Crush Koby Ginder (Brunswick, Conn.) won a pair of faceoffs for the Tigers.

’21 Ambush Danny Zabbia (Half Hollow Hills West) was completely unstoppable, torching Saint Michael’s for a career-best seven goals before adding four more against Georgian Court en route to claiming NE10 Player of the Wee honors for the second time this season.

Wingate 15, Catawba 8

’19 White Marc Cottage (Smithtown West) snapped home a hat trick and set up another goal to help the Bulldogs cruise.

Chestnut Hill 10, Molloy 9
Molloy 26, D’Youville 5

’19 White Christian Michaels (Kings Park) stopped nine shots and snagged two ground balls against Chestnut Hill before stopping five shots to help the Lions get back into the win column.

Farmingdale State 17, Eastern Connecticut 0
Farmingdale State 22, Sage 5

’18 Extreme Jake Wandle (Rocky Point) got the offense rolling in both games for the Rams, stringing together back-to-back four -goal games for Farmingdale. Wandle also tacked on two assists, a caused turnover and a ground ball against East Conn.

’18 Extreme Robbie Varello (Smithtown East) tallied twice and added an assist and a ground ball against Sage.

Hartwick 12, Oswego 6
Hartwick 16, Plattsburgh 4

’20 Varsity defenseman Nick Cacciola (Shoreham-Wading River) helped Hartwick to a pair of wins with three ground balls against Oswego and two caused turnovers and a ground ball against Plattsburgh.

Wilkes 11, Manhattanville 9

’20 Orange defenseman Matthew Warns (Mattituck) excelled off the ground with a whopping eight ground balls and one caused turnover to help Wilkes to its second win in the past three games.

York 16, Franklin & Marshall 10
Lynchburg 13, Franklin & Marshall 12

’19 White defenseman Kyle Craig (Wantagh) carved out a pair of turnovers and collected five ground balls against York before chipping in two ground balls against Lynchburg.

RPI 18, Vassar 7

’21 Ambush Trey Berry (Chaminade) scored once against Hamilton and also grabbed a ground ball in the win over Vassar.

Salisbury 20, Cortland 12

’21 Ambush Sam Rothman (Half Hollow Hills East) tallied once for Cortland.

’21 Ambush defenseman Aidan Bonn (Huntington) recorded his first point of the season with an assist to go along with four ground balls and a caused turnover against UMass-Boston. He followed it up with two caused turnovers and two ground balls against Lake Forest.

Sage 17, St. Joseph’s 4

’19 White Michael Carere (Connetquot) supplied half the Golden Eagles’ offense with two goals to go with 13 ground balls.
