2023 Team 91 in College: April 17 Recap

For the second time this season, Duke beat Virginia in a battle of two of the nation’s three best teams. For the second time this season, a Team 91 2020 Crush and St. Anthony’s alum took center stage for the Blue Devils.

This time, though, it was Andrew McAdorey who shined brightest. McAdorey scored a hat trick and added an assist and a ground ball as Duke edged the ‘Hoos, 15-14.

’19 Orange defenseman Kenny Brower (Massapequa) was his usual standout self on the back end for Duke, grabbing four ground balls in the process. ’20 Crush Brennan O’Neill (St. Anthony’s) and ’18 Extreme Owen Caputo (Middle Creek, N.C.) posted matching two-goal, one-assist performances for the Blue Devils. ’19 Orange LSM Tyler Carpenter (Salisbury, Conn.) grabbed five ground balls, caused a turnover and set up one of McAdorey’s goals on a fast break off the faceoff.  ’19 Orange Jake Caputo (Middle Creek, N.C.) put up two caused turnovers and added a ground ball from his SSDM spot.

Lehigh 15, Colgate 8

’19 Orange Christian Mulé (Half Hollow Hills East) handed out four assists and tallied twice, to go with a ground ball and a caused turnover, as the Mountain Hawks cruised.

’19 Orange Justin Tiernan (Glenn) fired home a hat trick and chipped in an assist and ground ball. ’19 Orange John Sidorski (East Islip) tacked on two assists, one caused turnover and a ground ball in the win.

Syracuse 15, North Carolina 14

’22 Smash Michael Leo (St. Anthony’s) scored the game-winner with 12 seconds left to lift the Orange past the Tar Heels.

Leo finished with two goals for ‘Cuse. ’22 Smash Joey Spallina (Mount Sinai) pushed past the 60-point plateau as a freshman with two goals and two assists, on top of picking up four ground balls and causing two turnovers. ’20 Crush defenseman Nick Caccamo (Harborfields) had a big game on the back end with three takeaways and two ground balls. ’22 Smash LSM Dylan Sageder (Mount Sinai) picked up one ground ball in the win.

Yale 16, Brown 10

’19 White Jared Paquette (West Islip) helped the Bulldogs to a crucial Ivy League victory on the strength of his 15 saves. He and fellow West Islip product ’19 Orange defenseman Mikey Alexander each snagged a pair of ground balls. ’21 Blaze Machado Rodriguez (Chaminade) won six faceoffs and scooped up four ground balls for Yale.

’22 Smash Marcus Wertheim (Smithtown East) tallied once for the Bears.

Binghamton 16, UMBC 13

’21 Blaze Matt Keegan (Sachem North) continued his assault on opposing defenses with another monster game. This time, Keegan popped a hat trick – his sixth straight game with at least three goals – to go with two assists and two ground balls to pace the Bearcats. ’18 Extreme defenseman Max Verch (Syosset) corralled a ground ball for the Bingo defense.

’20 Crush Jayson Tingue (Bay Shore) stopped seven shots to go with three ground balls and a caused turnover for the Retrievers.

Hofstra 8, Drexel 7

’19 Orange Sam Lutfi (Massapequa) ripped home a goal and added a ground ball to lead the Pride to a win. ’21 Blaze Chris Barry (East Meadow) chipped in a ground ball for Hofstra.

Air Force 22, Detroit Mercy 7

’20 Crush LSM Chris Bardak (St. Anthony’s) collected five ground balls, caused a turnover and had two assists as the Falcons rolled.

Albany 13, NJIT 7

’22 Smash defenseman Max Neeson (Pottsgrove, Pa.) came off the bench to take the ball away three times and snag a ground ball to lead the stingy Great Danes’ defense. ’22 Smash Alex Pfeiffer (Sachem North) pocketed a goal for Albany.

Johns Hopkins 17, Ohio State 8

’20 Crush Brett Martin (Half Hollow Hills East) caused two turnovers and grabbed two ground balls as part of a staunch defensive effort for the Blue Jays.

Princeton 17, Dartmouth 7

’20 Crush Koby Ginder (Brunswick, Conn.) won a pair of faceoffs to help Princeton cruise.

Penn 15, Harvard 9

’19 Orange LSM Greg Campisi (St. Anthony’s) vacuumed up five ground balls and took the ball away once for the Crimson.

Cornell 11, Army 10

’19 Orange Angelo Petrakis (Massapequa) won a faceoff as the Big Red claimed its fifth victory in the past six games.

Maryland 11, Rutgers 8

’18 Extreme LSM Ethan Rall (Islip) picked up four ground balls to go with a caused turnover for the Scarlet Knights. ’19 Orange James Ringer (Bayport-Blue Point) doled out an assist for Rutgers.

Denver 12, St. John’s 10

’19 Orange Kyle Munson (Calhoun) stopped nine shots, grabbed two ground balls and caused a turnover for the Red Storm. ’20 Orange defenseman Jack McCarthy (Connetquot) added a caused turnover and a ground ball, while ’20 Crush Jack Schirtzer (Mount Sinai) smashed out a turnover.

’21 Blaze defenseman Aiden McCaffrey‘s (Comsewogue) first career goal highlighted the Red Foxes’ win over Siena. McCaffrey also added two ground balls and a caused turnover for Marist, who also got a caused turnover from ’19 Orange defenseman Larry Cangro (Eastport-South Manor). McCaffrey popped out a pair of turnovers and corralled three ground balls against the Sharks.

’20 Crush defenseman Trevor Marsala (Mount Sinai) became the Saints’ all-time leader in caused turnovers with two against the Jaspers and one against the Red Foxes. He snagged three ground balls in both games. ’21 Ambush Ryan McCarthy (Northport) paired a goal with an assist while also causing a turnover against Manhattan. He then buried a hat trick, along with a caused turnover and two ground balls, against Marist.

’19 White Christian Lyons (Syosset) fired home a goal in both of the Jaspers’ games.

’21 Blaze defenseman AJ Volkmann tucked home his first career goal while also adding two ground balls for LIU.

Delaware 12, Stony Brook 9

’19 Orange Blake Behlen (Commack) dished out two assists and tallied once to go with a ground ball for the Seawolves. ’22 Smash Sean Carlo (Wantagh) handed out a helper for Stony Brook.

’20 Orange defenseman Colby Suglia (Mattituck) combined for two caused turnovers and three ground balls for Queens.

Dominican 17, Bridgeport 12

’19 White Billy Gordon (St. Anthony’s) paired three goals with two assists, along with three ground balls, to headline the Chargers’ win.

Wingate 24, Coker 7

’19 White Marc Cottage (Smithtown West) set up three goals and scored two of his own to lead the Bulldogs to a romp to cap a perfect stroll through the SAC.

Molloy 15, Frostburg State 14

’19 White Christian Michaels (Kings Park) nearly willed Molloy to an upset of Adelphi with a whopping 19 saves to go with three ground balls. He then stopped 11 shots and snagged a pair of grounders against Frostburg State.

’21 Ambush Danny Zabbia (Half Hollow Hills West) erupted for five goals and an assist, along with a caused turnover, in the rout of Assumption. He then tossed in a goal and grabbed three ground balls against Bentley.

Franklin & Marshall 18, Ursinus 16

’19 White defenseman Kyle Craig (Wantagh) was a force for the Diplomats, coming away with five ground balls and taking the ball away three times.

Cortland 17, Brockport 7

’21 Ambush defenseman Conner Gallagher (Northport) spearheaded Cortland’s defense with two ground balls and a caused turnover and ’21 Ambush Sam Rothman (Half Hollow Hills East) scored once to lead the Red Dragons.

Fairleigh-Dickinson 13, Delaware Valley 12

’21 Ambush defenseman Aidan Bonn (Huntington) racked up four ground balls and a caused turnover in FDU’s win. He chipped in three ground balls and a caused turnover in the second game of the week.

’18 Extreme Robbie Varello (Smithtown East) tallied once to go with a ground ball and ’18 Extreme Jake Wandle (Rocky Point) chipped in an assist for the Rams.

’19 White Michael Carere (Connetquot) went off for five goals and an assist, complete with five ground balls and four faceoff wins, against the Privateers. He followed it up with four more goals, along with seven ground balls and six faceoff wins, against Purchase.
