Notre Dame 15, Ohio State 6
Looks like the Irish are back.
Notre Dame very much looked the part of a two-time defending national champion in Sunday's NCAA tournament opener. It helped to have Team 91 2023 Bandits Jordan Faison, who scored once and caused two turnovers to help the Irish roll past Big Ten champion Ohio State, 15-6.
Faison also collected a ground ball for Notre Dame, which moves on to play Penn State. '22 Smash Brock Behrman (Salisbury, Conn.) also tallied for the Irish.
Syracuse 13, Harvard 12
It was a comeback for the ages for the Orange as they overcame an 8-2 deficit to knock off the Crimson in overtime. '22 Smash Joey Spallina (Mount Sinai) set up the game-winning goal in the extra frame to cap off a one-goal, two-assist, two-ground ball day for the Orange.
'20 Crush defenseman Nick Caccamo (Harborfields) scored his first goal of the season to help fuel Syracuse's comeback. Caccamo also grabbed a ground ball in the win. '22 Smash Michael Leo (St. Anthony's) paired a goal with an assist while also collecting two ground balls for the Orange.
'23 Bandits Jack Speidell (St. Anthony's) snapped home a hat trick for the Crimson. He finished his sophomore season with nine hat tricks.
Penn State 13, Colgate 11
'24 Wolfpack Hunter Aquino (Academy of the New Church, Pa.) set up the game-tying goal that fueled a game-ending three-goal PSU run as the Nittany Lions fended off the Raiders' upset bid.
Aquino finished with a pair of assists and a ground ball for Penn State.
Albany 11, Siena 9
Cornell 15, Siena 6
'24 Wolfpack Brady Smith (Bayport-Blue Point) helped the Saints reach the round of 16 with 11 saves, three ground balls and a caused turnover. '22 Smash LSM Max Neeson (Pottsgrove, Pa.) vacuumed up five ground balls, while '22 Smash Alex Pfeiffer (Sachem North) scored once.
The Great Danes' season came to an end against the top seed Big Red. Smith stopped nine shots and grabbed three ground balls. Neeson caused a pair of turnovers, while '23 Warriors James Reid (Sachem North) tallied once. Pfeiffer scooped up a ground ball.
'21 Ambush Ryan McCarthy (Northport) dished out four assists and scored once, plus a caused turnover, for the Saints. '24 Wolfpack SSDM Ryan Wilson (Shoreham-Wading River) scooped up two ground balls and took the ball away once.
Princeton 22, Towson 12
'20 Crush faceoff midfielder Koby Ginder (Brunswick, Conn.) won three faceoffs and grabbed a pair of ground balls to help Princeton roll in the first-round Tiger-off.
'23 Warriors Ronan Fitzpatrick (Sayville) burst past the 40-goal plateau on the season with a four-goal game. He also took the ball away once for Towson.
Richmond 13, North Carolina 10
'23 Bandits Owen Duffy (St. Anthony's) racked up a hat trick and added two assists to eclipse the 60-point plateau for the first time in his Tar Heel career.
'20 Crush Ryan Levy (East Chapel Hill, N.C. / Taft, Conn.) tallied once for Carolina.
Georgetown 16, Duke 12
'20 Crush Andrew McAdorey (St. Anthony's) had a goal, an assist and a ground ball in his Blue Devil finale. '21 Blaze SSDM Jake Wilson (Shoreham-Wading River) capped his career with a takeaway and two ground balls.
Division II
Molloy 15, Pace 14
'21 Ambush Danny Zabbia (Half Hollow Hills West) scored once, set up another, added a ground ball and caused a turnover for the Setters. '21 Ambush Timmy Morrow (Massapequa) tallied once for Pace, which fell in overtime.
Division III
Cortland 23, Illinois Wesleyan 8
Cortland 10, York 6
'21 Ambush Sam Rothman (Half Hollow Hills East) led the rout of Illinois Wesleyan with two goals, two assists and a pair of ground balls. '21 Ambush defenseman Logan Schanars (Half Hollow Hills East) added a ground ball.
Rothman was back for more against York. He tallied twice, set up another, grabbed two ground balls and caused a turnover. '21 Ambush LSM Conner Gallagher (Northport) picked up a ground ball to help Cortland reach the quarterfinals.
RPI 13, Wesleyan 7
'21 Ambush Trey Berry (Chaminade) scooped up a ground ball as RPI earned a spot in the quarterfinals.
Nazareth 14, Geneseo 12
'21 Ambush goalie Andrew Tittmann (Northport) denied 14 shots and collected three ground balls for Geneseo.
