22 has Syracuse at No. 1.

Team 91 2022 Smash alum Joey Spallina put on a show in Friday night’s showdown between No. 2 Syracuse and No. 1 Maryland. The Mount Sinai product racked up a four-goal, five-ground ball effort as the Orange toppled the Terps, 11-9, for their first win over Maryland since 2011.

’22 Smash Michael Leo (St. Anthony’s) tallied twice for the Orange, which also got the first two ground balls of ’25 Shock LSM and two-sport athlete Joe Filardi‘s career. ’23 Bandits Tyler McCarthy (Connetquot) racked up a goal and a ground ball, while ’24 Wolfpack LSM Vincent Bolognino (Harborfields) tracked down a ground ball in the win.

’19 Orange defenseman Mikey Alexander (West Islip) forced a turnover for Maryland.

’24 Wolfpack Luke Breslin (St. Anthony’s) led the Mountain Hawks to a pair of wins with an 11-point week. He burned the Gaels for four goals, four assists and a pair of ground balls. Breslin then added a goal and two assists in Lehigh’s upset of the Wolverines. ’22 Smash goalie Bryce Pang (Deerfield, Mass.) made the first two saves of his career in the win over Iona.

’23 Bandits Owen Duffy (St. Anthony’s) was back to his normal productive ways with a 13-point week. Duffy racked up a goal, four assists and two ground balls against the Panthers before adding three goals, five assists, a takeaway and a ground ball in the rout of the Gaels. ’25 Shock Gary Merrill (St. Anthony’s) recorded his first two career goals and first career assist against Iona.

’25 Shock Anthony Raio (Half Hollow Hills West) scored his first career goal against the Panthers, adding two ground balls in the process, and added another goal against Iona. ’25 Shock LSM Parker McDonald (St. Anthony’s) gobbled up a trio of ground balls in the two games.

’24 Wolfpack goalie Sal Caputo (Chaminade) made his first three career saves in relief for Iona and picked up two ground balls to boot.

Penn State 13, Princeton 7

’24 Wolfpack Hunter Aquino (Academy of the New Church, Pa.) continued his blistering start to the season as he racked up a hat trick in a statement win for the Nittany Lions.

Brown 10, Fairfield 8

’22 Smash Marcus Wertheim (Smithtown East) got his senior year started with a bang by burying two goals and handing out an assist in the Bears’ win. Wertheim also chipped in a ground ball in the victory.

Harvard 10, Providence 4

’23 Bandits Jack Speidell (St. Anthony’s) dished out two assists, tallied once, caused a turnover and snared a pair of ground balls to fuel the Crimson’s rout.

Saint Joseph’s 11, Villanova 9

’23 Warriors Tyler Moore (Connetquot) ripped home two goals and added a helper as the Hawks tamed the rival Wildcats.

Johns Hopkins 13, Loyola 7

’23 Bandits LSM Luke Martin (St. Anthony’s) gobbled up two ground balls and caused a turnover as the Blue Jays stayed perfect.

’22 Smash Brady West (South Side) found the back of the net once and added a ground ball for the Greyhounds.

Delaware 12, St. John’s 11

’25 Shock Matt Triolo (John Glenn) sniped his first career goal and added his first career assist as the Blue Hens staved off the St. John’s upset bid. ’20 Orange Cory Capri (John Glenn / Hill School, Pa.) also tallied once as UD claimed its first win of the season.

Notre Dame 16, Marquette 11

’23 Bandits Brock Behrman (Salisbury, Conn.) paired a goal with an assist – plus a ground ball – to help the Irish start their season off with a win.

Mercer 16, VMI 12

’21 Blaze faceoff midfielder Chris Cappelmann (Smithtown East) won 10 faceoffs, collected eight ground balls and caused a turnover to help Mercer to a 3-0 start.

UMass-Lowell 14, Mercyhurst 13

’23 Warriors faceoff midfielder Owen McIntee (St. Anthony’s) won all three of his faceoffs to help the Riverhawks to a win.

Cornell 11, Albany 10

’25 Shock SSDM Matthew Pettis (Massapequa) nearly led the Great Danes to an upset of the defending national champions with a pair of caused turnovers in his college debut. ’24 Wolfpack goalie Brady Smith (Bayport-Blue Point) denied seven shots to go with five ground balls and a caused turnover for the Great Danes.

’24 Wolfpack Austin Oppenheim (Mount Sinai) won a pair of faceoffs and had a ground ball for Albany. The Great Danes also got a ground ball from both ’22 Smash defenseman Max Neeson (Pottsgrove, Pa.) and ’22 Smash Alex Pfeiffer (Sachem North).

St. Bonaventure 10, Binghamton 9

’23 Warriors PJ Shanahan’s (Bayport-Blue Point) tally with 1:47 to play held up as the game-winner in the Bonnies’ win over the Bearcats.

’24 Wolfpack defenseman Aidan McMinn (Ward Melville) was a force for Binghamton against St. Bonaventure. He collected four ground balls and caused a trio of turnovers to lead the Bearcats’ defense. McMinn also vacuumed up two ground balls against the Leopards.

Towson 12, Navy 8

’24 Wolfpack Pat Flaherty (Chaminade / Salisbury, Conn.) put in work on the defensive end with three takeaways and four ground balls for the Midshipmen. His older brother, ’22 Smash Jack Flaherty (Chaminade), scored once for Navy, which also got an assist from ’23 Bandits Jack Ponzio (St. Anthony’s).

Georgetown 12, Penn 9

’23 Bandits Leo Hoffman (Brunswick, Conn.) handed out an assist to go with a ground ball for the Quakers. ’24 Wolfpack defenseman Dante Vardaro (St. Anthony’s) also collected a ground ball for Penn.

UMass 16, Quinnipiac 8

’23 Warriors Cole Marsala (Mount Sinai) paired two goals with three assists to go with a ground ball to spearhead the Bobcats’ offense. ’21 Blaze goalie Mason Oak (Comsewogue) stopped a dozen shots and picked up two ground ball for Quinnipiac, which also got a goal, four ground balls and a caused turnover from ’23 Warriors Nick Meoni (Sachem North)’23 Bandits LSM Glenn Platania (St. Anthony’s) took the ball away once and added a ground ball.

Siena 14, Hofstra 10

’22 Smash Anthony Mollica (Massapequa) handed out four helpers to go with a goal and three ground balls for the Pride.

Boston University 13, Dartmouth 5

’24 Wolfpack Ben Morris (Bayport-Blue Point) doled out an assist as the Terriers rolled past the Big Green.

Army 12, Yale 6

’22 Smash defenseman Patrick Pisano (Cold Spring Harbor) took the ball away once and grabbed a ground ball for the Bulldogs.

Rutgers 14, Stony Brook 11

’22 Smash Sean Carlo (Wantagh) secured a ground ball for the Seawolves.

Adelphi 21, Walsh 5

’24 Wolfpack SSDM Brett Oppenheim (Mount Sinai) caused a turnover and snared a ground ball as the defending national champions opened their season with a win.

Lenoir-Rhyne 13, Rollins 12

’25 Hornets goalie Gavin Stabile (Northport) made two saves in split duty as Lenoir-Rhyne won in overtime for its first win of the year.

Division III

Farmingdale State 18, DeSales 15

’23 Warriors Joey Forchelli (MacArthur) made his long-awaited Rams debut and didn’t disappoint. Forchelli, who missed last year with a torn ACL after transferring from Providence, went off for six goals as Farmingdale State opened its season with a high-scoring win. Forchelli also grabbed a ground ball in the win.

’21 Ambush Casey Fortunato (Northport) filled up the stat sheet for the Rams. He scored once, set up three more goals, collected a trio of ground balls and caused two turnovers.

Western Connecticut State 10, Brockport 9

’23 Warriors Cody Suhr (Sachem North) snapped home a hat trick to help West Conn topple Brockport.

’25 Hornets Joey D’Orazio (Sachem East) pocketed a pair of goals in his college debut. ’25 Hornets Thomas Keegan (Sachem North) chipped in an assist and a pair of ground balls in his debut.

Maritime 12, Coast Guard 10

’24 Wolfpack Ryan Hannaford (Bayport-Blue Point) scored his fourth goal of the game to give Maritime a lead it wouldn’t relinquish as the Privateers opened their season with a win. Hannaford also tacked on a ground ball in the win.
