There's coming up big in a huge game, and then there's what Xavier Arline did Tuesday night.
The Team 91 2020 Crush standout and North Carolina commit erupted for a five-goal first half and set up the game-winning goal in overtime as Shoreham-Wading River dealt Mount Sinai its lone loss of the year, 14-13, in the Suffolk County Class C championship game.
“Just be smart, most of all,” Arline said of his gameplan to Newsday's Kenny DeJohn. “Always live to fight another day. So if something doesn’t work, don’t take a bad shot. Take the right shot.”
Arline finished with a ridiculous six-goal, two-assist stat line, his sixth six-goal game of the year, for the Wildcats. Johnny Schwarz ('21 Blaze) tossed in four goals, while his brother, SWR LSM Tyler ('21 Blaze), scored once. Alec Gregorek ('22 Smash) also tallied once for the Wildcats. Tyler Gatz ('21 Blaze) paced the Mustangs with a goal and two helpers, while Brandon Ventarola ('21 Blaze) and Joey Spallina ('20 Crush/'22 Smash) both added a goal and an assist. LSM Jack Schirtzer ('20 Crush/Maryland) also netted a goal for Mount Sinai.
Massapequa 11, Syosset 8: Angelo Petrakis ('19 Orange/Cornell) came up big in the fourth quarter, winning all six of his faceoffs as part of a 17-for-21 game, and Sam Lutfi ('19 Orange/Hofstra) scored twice as the Chiefs won their third straight Nassau County Class A title.
“Angelo is the fuse, he lights us, he sparks us and leads us,” teammate Logan Tucker told Newsday's Sal Cacciatore. “He’s everything we need all the time.”
Kenny Brower ('19 Orange/Duke) helped shut down a potent Syosset offense, led by Andrew Giovinco's ('19 Orange/Air Force) two assists and a goal and an assist from Christian Lyons ('19 White/Manhattan).
Manhasset 6, Garden City 5: Gavin Pappas ('19 White/Denison) had a goal and an assist and Will Puccio ('19 White/Trinity) chipped in a goal for Garden City in the Nassau County Class B final.
Mattituck/Southold 14, Port Jefferson 10: Dane Reda ('20 Crush) buried a pair of goals and added an assist as Mattituck took home the Suffolk County Class D championship.
