One more member of Team 91's vaunted 2018 team is going to play in the Under Armour All-America Game.
91 and Half Hollow Hills East defenseman Michael Gomez, a Johns Hopkins signee, will join 91 teammates Owen Caputo (Middle Creek, N.C./Duke), Frank Marinello (Chaminade/Duke) and George Wichelns (Connetquot/Maryland) in the prestigious game, which will take place Saturday, June 30 at 8 p.m. on Gomez's future home field, Homewood Field.
"It was so cool to get the call, and it's definitely going to be a new experience," Gomez said. "I've never done anything like that. I remember watching the game in middle school and thinking it'd be cool to play in one day. I wasn't really expecting it and I wasn't thinking about it because I'm focused on my season, so it was kind of out of the blue."
No other club will feature more of its players in the game than Team 91, and Gomez is definitely looking forward to linking up with his three teammates again before they head off to the Big Ten and ACC next year.
"It's awesome to be with the 91 guys again. We play great together and we always have a great time together," Gomez added. "The competition is going to be awesome. We've played with or against most of these guys during the summer, and any time you get to play on Homewood, I think it's a great experience and always a great day for lacrosse. Getting all of that gear is going to be sweet, too."
Ty Xanders, Inside Lacrosse's Director of Recruiting & HS Content, said that the selection committee took note of Gomez's strong senior year, which carried over from an excellent final summer on the club circuit. That play cemented Gomez's spot in the game, where he'll be tasked with shutting down some of the country's top attackmen.
"Known for his physicality and defensive leadership, Gomez brings hard-nosed and fundamental 1-on-1 play to the table," Xanders said. "He has drastically improved his stick skills since committing to Hopkins years ago and his hard work has helped him turn into a frequent offensive threat for the Thunderbirds. His style of play will be welcomed at Homewood Field under head coach Dave Pietramala, a fellow Long Island native who is heralded as the best defenseman ever."
Congratulations to Michael on his selection!
